That's stunning, I love timelapse footage. The fog in this is amazing.
Cheers

I am sitting on the fence for this one. I like the concept of the Olympics, generally I think it is good for bringing people together.
These Olympics have been very commercial & political. I am not working because of these Olympics. It is difficult to get around Vancouver by vehicle because everything is "secured". I am told that I can walk anywhere ~ just not drive. I haven't tested that out, besides I don't fancy walking over town carrying a ladder, paint & tools. Just been hanging out in my neighbourhood, chilling.
I work in the film industry as a painter. Last I heard there are only nine productions at the moment because there is no location shooting allowed during the Olympics and the logistics of transporting gear does not add up, nor is there much major construction going on.
When we first heard about the Olympics coming to town we were given a price tag of around $600 Million. Last I heard the price is now closer to $6 Billion and apparently we are going to be paying for it, along with the big fat rises the government gave to themselves.
There are positive aspects to the Olympics. Bringing people together, healthy competition, learning about other cultures with all the pavilions, potentially bringing trade and industry to Vancouver. However the place is pretty secure. On the opening night there was a rather loud military chopper hovering over my place at about 100 feet, shining a search lamp, searching for something but inevitably hit all the local rooftops. It was there for roughly two or three hours and left close to midnight.
It has certainly been a contentious topic in Vancouver, as you can see from that video you posted the link to. When they announced that they would be using the Inukshuk as the symbol for the Vancouver Winter Olympics I felt that was a bit pretentious as the Inukshuk is an Inuit symbol and has little to do with BC, apart from we have one in English Bay that was given to us by the Inuit for Expo86. It would have been more appropriate to use a Totum pole for this part of the country.
Regarding the protest that turned riotous: It has been said that it was a peaceful protest until twenty odd people wearing black balaclavas turned up and started throwing things and breaking big bank windows down town. Some say they were police plants, although that makes no sense to me. Other reports state that it is a group from Quebec that makes it there business to go around the continent starting riots out of protests "because they can". I find that hard to believe too, 'though one guy has been arrested for doing the same somewhere in the states apparently.
Typically, I find the media likes sensation. I find this with most media these days, whether it be the CBC or VMC local independent news. Everybody seems to have an agenda. Although the police have been known to be brutal when push comes to shove.
Vancouver, however ~ is a beautiful city. I don't jive with the current politics, there are lots of things that are wrong in the running of the province but I was born here. I have lived in other places in the world but all the same ~ Vancouver is a beautiful city.

Thanks for the feedback.
Hope the fence is strong because I will be seating on the fence with you on this one.
I like the spirit of the Olympic but the logistic of it always bring abuse to the local community and environment.
Vancouver region looks like a nice place, maybe one day......... _________________ 97 silver SWB 2.8 TD Electric disable seat, Tome bashplate

I have a dream that one day I would save up some dosh, take a boat to Japan, with my van; visit Mitsubishi and meet the previous owner for tea (show him what has become of his old ride); take another boat to Vladivostok then drive down the east side of Asia; hop over to Aus. back up to Asia then take the Silk Road to Europe; catch a boat to the Maritimes then drive back across Canada ~ stopping in on people in the various countries along the way.
It's a bit fanciful but cool none the less.

I loved the vid. I am sitting on the fence aswell. I have a few issues with
the olympics.
We Australians got a silver medal in the mogals run and that's great but the thing is, as nice as the bloke who won for us might or might not be he was born in Canada, has a canadian acsent. I feel bad saying this but it's not the same thing. The snow in our country is rubbish so for one of us to win is something akin to cool runnings. We have a 15year old girl who is just getting some practise at the moment in the same run. ( she came 23rd) We will all be watching her in 2014 and if she gets a medal the elation will be more real for me at least.
As for everything else? well put it this way the governments of all countries are trying to keep control. The best way to take focus away from the intent of a protest is to turn it violent. So plant some thugs in the protester's mix and the piont they tried to make no longer makes the headlines. The focus is now on the violence and the arest's. Insidiuos isn't it? and I'm afraid that's just the tip of the iceberg. Put the threat of terroism in the mix and you have the perfect justification to close streets to stop motorist etc etc etc. Why you may ask well I have never understood the obsetion to control other's so can;t say.
I understand the other issues with the olympics stampeading all in the way but that's what happens when egomaniacs are in control. Tax dollars are up for grabs and the frenzy is on. Now for my dream I want to learn too sail and spend my later years sailing the globe. Canada and alaska are on the top of the list. _________________ If only I knew yesterday what I know today and I could spell too. |

Thanks Bobbell,
Speaking of "Cool Runnings", the mogul events are on Cypress Mountain, no? There is no natural snow up there. It's all been helicoptered in. Talk about selling coal to Newcastle! They laid down plywood, covered it in straw, then dropped snow from other places onto it. This year has been really strange as far as weather is concerned. We had a warm winter in 2003 ~ but there was still snow on the mountains. This year went from Autumn to early Spring, completely omitting Winter! I live on the North Shore. When I look out my window I can see "The Cut" on Grouse Mountain ~ it looks like early April. Three weeks ago I went for a walk in Lynn Valley Head Waters ~ I should have been trudging through at least a couple of feet of snow. Not one drop of snow and the creek level was high, as in Spring run off, yet it was January. So your Silver medallist (Begg-Smith?) must have felt at home.
For me: Sports Day at school better resembles the concept of the Olympics than what I am seeing here, now. To be quite honest with you ~ there are aspects of these Olympics that remind me of the 1936 Berlin Olympics ~ it's not the athletes, they are doing their athletic thing and I take my hat off to them; it's the hidden corporate agenda in all it's vanity rearing it's ugly head. Things have changed in Vancouver. There used to be a time where people were accepted as they were ~ there appears to be this new model that is being showcased by these games.
I typically wear utilitarian clothing, something I don't fear to get dirty if I need to crawl under my van. One day I drive down town to pick my girl up. As I wait for her I see someone passing and I approach him to ask for directions: "Excuse me, sir...." "I don't give out money" was his response. I don't look that bad, I just don't appear to fit this new model.
Obsession to control.... I think it is ultimately fear based. We are born into this world; we have a concious view of our own mortality ~ I think it blows people's minds and one way to deal with that is to control your situation. I think we all experience this at some point in our life but for some it becomes an obsession, or even a perversion ~ and I think it is related to the fear of death. Another way to get over this is to go shopping! "Yes, I would like to purchase a set of Rancho 9000 air shocks for my van, please sir!"
If you ever manage to make it up this way be sure to notify us at Delica Canada, we could get together over coffee and talk about Delicas! There is one fellow in our group who is thinking about visiting Australia, I'm sure he will be looking for Delica Club members along the way.
Falco.

Thanks for the video! I showed it to my wife and daughter as well and we sat there enthralled by the beauty. Excellent quality. _________________ SuperEx 1996 2.8TD bashplates|aircon shield|PIAA lights|RoofRack|awening|LEDs

Just a follow up from the "fence perspective". I read this artical in the Vancouver Province newspaper this morning regarding the protest turned riot. Here's a link to the on line version:

I'm open to further discussion if you wish... smiles.
